English as a Second Language (ESL)

Academic Language

Many students who speak English as their first language will have trouble with "Academic Language". Academic Language is the vernacular used in textbooks, classrooms and on tests. It tends to be different vocabulary and structure than language you would typically use in social interactions. Low academic language skills have been show to correlate with below average performance in school academics.
