Speech-Language Impairment
"A student with a speech-language impairment shall have a communicative disorder which prevents the student from receiving reasonable educational benefit from general education." Colorado Department of Education Definition.
Academic Language
Many students who speak English as their first language will have trouble with "Academic Language". Academic Language is the vernacular used in textbooks, classrooms and on tests. It tends to be different vocabulary and structure than language you would typically use in social interactions. Low academic language skills have been show to correlate with below average performance in school academics. Source
